This natural cotton oven cloth has a bright red edge and measures 85cm by 50cm. It is thick, hard-wearing woven cotton, made in the north of England, and it does the work of both an oven cloth and a tea towel.

This is the one you grab without thinking. Fold it double to lift a hot dish off the Aga or out of the oven, then use it flat to wipe the counter and dry the pans. If you hesitate to wipe messy hands on your good tea towel, reach for this instead. It keeps your nice linen for the table.

The red binding is stitched around the edge, not printed on, so it holds up wash after wash and adds a cheerful bit of colour by the cooker. A hanging loop keeps it within reach.

It gets better with use. The first wash shrinks it a little, and that is the point. The cotton comes out thicker, softer and more absorbent than it went in.
